Visiting America for youth leadership program, lessons learnt
In the month of February this year, I travelled to the land of the brave and free. As the plane cruised through the skies my own mind raced with questions and imaginings; and as the plane soared so did my anticipation of the lessons and experiences in store on the journey ahead. This was my first travel to America. Is America the way it is told through Hollywood scripts? Or is it as told by missionaries, aid experts or cable news? And, what is the untold story of America? One month on - I returned with my own answers.

Kibaki and Raila leadership response to runaway commodity prices hurting poor Kenyans
As workers and taxpayers of this country, we were shocked and disgusted yesterday that President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga refused to attend the Uhuru Park workers' day celebrations.
We wish to inform Mr. Mwai Kibaki and Mr. Raila Odinga that they are Kenyans’ leaders both in good and bad times. That they skipped the workers’ day celebration is an utter shame and a slap in the face of workers whose sweat produces the very revenue that runs their government. The same commitment with which they met the people as they sought our votes is the minimum manner…

Lack of jobs among youth a recipe for wars: World Bank
The World Bank has asked African governments to urgently tackle youth unemployment and inequality among different population groups to avoid losing economic gains.
It says that violence is spurred by lack of jobs among the youth, inequality between social, ethnic, regional or religious groups as well as infiltration of trafficking networks and foreign security interference.
In its World Development Report 2011 released on Sunday, the bank says that violence occurs where governments do not provide security and access to justice, markets do not provide employment opportunities and communities have lost cohesion.

Leaders have failed to resolve youth woes
A common assumption among economists is that the ‘rising tide will float even small boats’, meaning that economic growth is supposed to lift even the very poor out of depths of poverty.
It follows that as long as a majority of the population remains unemployed and shackled to extreme poverty, Kenya’s claim on upward growth is fallacious.
Therefore, poverty among youth remains an indictment of the Coalition Government and a call for better leadership.
In the wake of post-election violence, the dialogue and reconciliation team noted that politicians exploited the youth poverty to mobilise them into violence that left more…

Youth unemployment a ticking time bomb
A common assumption among economists is that the ‘‘rising tide will float even small boats’’, meaning that economic growth is supposed to lift even the very poor out of squalor.
It follows that as long as a majority of the population remains unemployed and shackled to extreme poverty, Kenya’s claim to economic growth is fallacious.
Poverty among youth due to joblessness remains an indictment of the coalition government’s performance.
In the wake of the 2008 post-election violence, the Kenya National Dialogue and Reconciliation team noted that politicians exploited youths’ poverty to mobilise them into violence that left 1,133 dead, more…

US vows not to pull plug on youth fund
The US will not abandon a Sh3.6 billion project to fund the youth, states ambassador Michael Ranneberger.
The ambassador told the Saturday Nation that the US was determined to give youths a bright future by assisting them to exploit their full potential.
“I can assure you that the project is ongoing,” Mr Ranneberger said.
The United States position has emboldened the youth, who now argue it is their time to lead, saying they are seeking the driver’s seat not because of their birth date but their new ideas.
In an interview with Saturday Nation, National Youth Forum secretary general Catherine…
